Lucas and Modesto

An original copy of the August 18, 1955 edition of the Modesto Bee (from the Modesto Bee archives). This is the first article ever published about George Lucas, pictured to the left in the photo, along with his boyhood friend Mel Cellini. The article discusses their kid's newspaper called "The Weekly Bugle," showing the creative energies of an 11 year old Modesto youth. Car-centered teenage life in downtown Modesto during the 1950s and 60s provided inspiration for George Lucas's breakthrough hit and American film classic American Graffiti. Burge's drive-in, located at the corner of 9th and O Streets, is pictured here.
George Lucas's interests in anthropology ("Indiana Jones") and mythology ("The Force") were spurred in part by his social science classes at Modesto Junior College. Here is a recently discovered term paper he wrote, dated to around 1963. It sold at auction for $1673.
